Architectural Model (EPQ)

For my EPQ I was demonstrating how vacant buildings in my area could be better utilized, I did this by designing a proposal for the renovation of a derelict depot building into to private student housing. This was the scale model I produced as a result.

What is your favourite building?

My favourite building is the Sacre Coeur in Paris.  I have always found that the Sacre Coeur seem to demand a certain authority over the city. The harmony between its location and the mixture of architectural styles gives it an aura of isolation, whilst at the same time sitting on top of one of the busiest cities.

A piece of architecture that I would like to experience in person?

In the future I would love to be able to see the Ta Prohm Temple in Cambodia.  I think the most important part of architecture is taking into account the context of the building and that the only way to make a building truly breathtaking is when it works symbiotically with its environment. Therefore I would love to get the opportunity to see what the effect is when the environment has actually become integrated into the structure of the building.

A review on an exhibition I have recently visited.

The most recent exhibition I have visited was the Titanic Museum in Belfast. It encompassed many fascinating facts and history about the ship.  However what I was most interested in was in the way that they celebrated the making and the design of the ship. Inside the museum it showed the floor plans of the ship, seeing the ship displayed like this was extraordinary and really allowed me to appreciate the level of work and detail required to design a structure of this magnitude. The architecture of the building itself was extremely effective, the four striking aluminium corners of the building mimicked the haul of the ship, being the height at which the actual ship would have stood it made you appreciate the grandeur and enormity of it before you had even entered the building.

Why I want to apply to Manchester?

I am drawn to buildings such as the town hall in Manchester and love the rich architectural history of it.  However, I think being in a city that is constantly progressing architecturally will help my ideas and designs grow. These two completely opposite elements of architecture are quite often hard to find together which is why I was delighted to discover the diversity of the architecture in the city. I believe I am most inspired by my surroundings.  The environment of Manchester’s modern developments juxtaposed with the classical Victorian buildings would be the perfect location for learning and developing skills in architecture. The degree course also appeals to me greatly. Having the unique opportunity of getting facilities and teaching from two institutions is incredible and offers so many more opportunities, not to mention being qualified from both universities. The distinction that having a qualification, or having the opportunity to get a qualification from Manchester for architecture offers is a definite added quality of the school. Its prestigious reputation and high ranking cannot be ignored and would assist greatly with future employability. The course itself encourages both working in a group and privately.  I think both these skills are crucial as progressing you own ideas are important however learning to work with others is equally important. The nature of the degree having a focus on design work is the reason I wish to study at Manchester.  During my time at university I want to grow both intellectually and creatively and with Manchester boasting students such as Norman Foster it clearly accommodates and encourages this.
